After the rain

You wore the heat like a shirt,

You drank until your mouth

Hung open and no longer

Bothered to shrug off the flies.

Later you rested under a slow fan.

You got up to watch from the window.

A dog snapped the ankle of a woman

Carrying bricks. She kicked it

And went on.

Again you turned away

Afraid to think that it was night

And with the poor

You would sleep with spiders,

Dust in your throat

And sliding down.

THE LEVEL AT WHICH THE SKY BEGINS

Hunched in the green weather of a pine

Above a theater of steaming roofs

And all there was to see
